FRANCE: SYSTEM U EXPANDS A WAREHOUSE
Article Abstract:
The Systeme U Nord-Ouest group is going to expand its 25,000 square metre warehouse at Beuzeville in the Eure departement. The new building will have ultramodern data processing equipment and it will be able to handle 870,000 pallets compared with 393,000 at present. Every year it will be able to expedite 400,000 tonnes of merchandise, compared with 180,000 tonnes at present and the workforce will be increased from 150 people to 250.

FRANCE: REVIEW OF MENU EXPRESS GOURMET CONCEPT
Article Abstract:
Monoprix has inaugurated the 'Menu Express Gourmet' concept, a 65 square metre space devoted exclusively to snacks. This area, which targets young city-dwellers in a hurry, has a wide range of 400 products half of which are chilled products and half of which are grocery products. They are groups into nine different categories: sweet and savoury snacks, the organic and health food section, light chilled products, chilled ready foods, cheeses, desserts, ice cream, beverages and the afternoon snack section. This space is open from 8.30 am to 9.00 pm, and is located in the basement of Printemp's Haussmann store in Paris. It has three checkout stands for rapid service. It also has an area for standing up and eating, which can handle 15 clients at a time, and two automatic vending machines for hot drinks. Ultimately, this space will have a microwave oven, so that people can heat their meals and eat them there.

FRANCE: SUPERMARKET AUTHORISATIONS IN 1998
Article Abstract:
There were 1,218 applications submitted to the French National Commercial Facilities Commission and to departemental commissions in 1998. Only 779 were granted; 400 for food supermarkets and hypermarkets, and 379 for big non food stores. The food supermarkets were granted 263 authorisations, totalling 175,760 square metres of sales space; hypermarkets were granted 100 authorisations totalling 163,858 square metres of sales space; and discount store were granted 27 authorisations totalling 17,588 square metres of sales space. There were 439 rejections in 1998, including 170 large non-food stores, and 269 for food supermarkets and hypermarkets - 169 supermarkets were turned down, 65 hypermarkets were rejected, and 34 discount stores were refused. There were three new food hypermarkets constructions authorised in 1998, 20 new discount stores, and 24 supermarkets. There were 7 new Champion food store constructions authorised, totalling 11,247 square metres of sales space, followed by six new Ecomarche store constructions totally 3,370 square metres of sales space, and three new Intermarche store constructions totalling 5,415 square metres of sales space. There were 8 new Aldi food store constructions authorised, totalling 5,771 square metres of sales space, and six new Lidl food store constructions, totalling 5,190 square metres of sales space. There were 343 store extensions authorised in 1998, including 7 discount store extensions, 93 hypermarket extensions, and 234 supermarket extensions. Leclerc was granted 49 hypermarket extensions for a total of 87,714 square metres of new sales space, and Intermarche was granted 86 supermarket extensions, totalling 55,790 square metres of new sales space, Super U was granted 36 supermarket extensions totalling 26,940 square metres of new sales space, Stock was granted 28 extensions for 15,808 square metres of sales space, and Champion was granted 23 extension, totalling 9,135 square metres of new sales space.
