Feeling groovy: liquid crystal displays
Article Abstract:
Researchers are working on ways to improve the LCD screen used on laptop computers so that they do not have to be viewed from straight on. The LCD screen works by using direct light on the grooves in the LCD display. One development proposed by researchers at ROLIC would use coumarin in the screen.

Whitney White and Pierre Wiltzius, two scientists in Murray Hill, NJ are studying the way a mixture of two polymers separate at various temperatures. The findings from this research may be used to develope new liquid-crystal display systems. The physical chemistry of the phenomenon is discussed.

IBM has developed the T220, a new liquid crystal display (LCD) which provides twice the resolution of previous state of the art LCDs. When seen from at least 18 inches away, images on the monitor cannot be distinguished from the real thing.
