The pied piper of Peking: rebel folksinger preaches his own brand of Maoism
Article Abstract:
Chinese officials have chosen to honor the freedom-fighting Mao Zedong of the 1930s and 40s and founder of the People's Republic of the 1950s during Mao centenary celebrations. What they are trying to downplay is the Mao who instigated the Cultural Revolution and China's long-time isolationist policies. Many of the younger crowd choose to worship the Mao of the Cultural Revolution, claiming that China needs some egalitarian spirituality. Christian pop singer Zhang Guangtian is profiled.

Peking paper chase: China orders life in jail for local journalist
Article Abstract:
Chinese journalist Wu Shishen has been sentenced to life imprisonment for leaking the text of General Sec Jiang Zemin's Oct 1992 speech to the Chinese Communist Party's 14th National Congress one week before the speech was officially made public. Wu's initial 10 year sentence was lengthened to life at Jiang's demand. This overreaction to a minor embarrassment shows that China is far from tolerating the free flow of information that is essential to making economic reform work.
