Green at heart
Article Abstract:
The design of the new Royal Victoria Dock Bridge, London, England, had to fulfill strict criteria of being high enough to allow sailing vessels to pass underneath but to be no higher than 40m because of the nearby airport. The bridge was designed by Architect Lifschutz Davidson. The bridge was built to encourage people to walk from a residential area on one side of the bridge to the Docklands Light Railway on the other side. A cable car will be built during the second phase of construction in order to provide users with cover in inclement weather.

Articulated dilemma
Article Abstract:
Patel Taylor had the winning bridge design for Bellmouth Passage in London's Docklands. Birds Portchmouth Russum's (BPR) bridge design did not win, but Patel Taylor's design was modified to the point that the mechanical engineering aspect became more similar to the BPR effort. Structural examinations led to the decision to make use of a horizontally swinging bridge.
