Hong Kong: a special report
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong is still ahead of Shanghai as an international financial center, although Shanghai should in time be the financial capital of China. The position of Shanghai may be strengthened by the financial crisis of the Asia-Pacific region. It is harder for China to raise foreign capital, given the financial crisis, but the current political and economic stability and huge market potential have strengthened its long-term attractiveness. By 2010 China might be a US$2 trillion economy. About half the exports of mainland China are handled by Hong Kong and Hong Kong accounts for about 1/3 of the foreign exchange earnings of mainland China.
