INDIA/AUSTRIA: BIOCHEMIE BETTING ON GENERICS
Article Abstract:
Austrian Kundl-based Biochemie GmbH, a subsidiary of Novartis, is expanding in the field of generic drugs by bringing on stream a Sch 150mn production plant in India. At the new site, Biochemie is to produce the volumes that are required for applications with the registration authorities. Novartis is betting on the expiry of the patent for cephalosporin. According to chief executive Heinrich Scherfler, the patent regulations in India are less tight than in the European Union.
