ING Baring props up ties: AFCO purchase won't dilute Dhana Siam link

Investment banking firm ING Baring is finalizing agreements to acquire 70% of securities brokerage firm AFCO Securities Corp. ING Baring conducts its Thai securities trading through Dhana Siam Finance & Securities PCL and the its acquisition into AFCO is not expected to alter the relationship. The acquisition into AFCO gives ING Baring the needed leverage to enter the Thai securities market, where ING Baring is enabled as a sub-broker, dealer, underwriter and investment adviser, especially for institutional clients. ING Baring plans to use Dhana Securities for its retail brokerage needs.

THailand's central bank has sought additional credit lines from foreign banks that serve the Thai market. The additional credit would be used to help Thailand's financial institutions remain solvent, in conjunction with an international effort led by the International Monetary Fund to keep the country's economy from slumping any further. Institutions such as BankAmerica Corp., Chase Manhattan Corp., HSBC Holdings PLC, Standard Chartered PLC, Sakura Bank Ltd., and Deutsche Bank AG are among the foreign banks operating in Thailand.

Convertible bond funds offer combined benefits

The convertible bond market is often ignored by average investors. While they may find the bonds interesting, they tend to steer clear of these exotic instruments and just leave them to the experts.
