IRIDIUM CLEARS ORIGINATION SERVICE HURDLES
Article Abstract:
On December 31, 1998, the Directorate-General of Foreign Trade issued licence to Iridium for importing . The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has cleared the tariff presented by Iridium. Iridium is now ready to launch its origination services from India in mid-January 1999. It is importing 500-1,000 handsets in the next 15 days. It is licensed to import 3,000- 4,000 handsets into India. Iridium plans to import dual-mode handsets which can be used to access local telephones too. It proposes to charge Rs75 per minute in India though it is $1-8 per minute elsewhere in the world. The cost of the satellite and dual mode handset is $3,000-3,500. (rk/kvr)

AP STATEWIDE AREA NETWORK TO BE READY BY JANUARY
Article Abstract:
The Andhra Pradesh Statewide Area Network (APSWAN) will be ready by January 1999. It will link all district headquarters with Hyderabad. It will use two MBP optic fibre cables. Andhra Pradesh Technical Services Limited will maintain APSWAN through a joint venture. The government of Andhra Pradesh plans to involve Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board for linking 1,100 mandal headquarters. The project will be ready by 2001 AD. (rk)
