Jobless rate shows a decline
Article Abstract:
A Management and Coordination Agency report showed that unemployment rate in Japan declined to 3.3% in Nov. 1996 from 3.4% the previous month. The rate for employees between the ages of 15 and 24 fell by 0.6 percent, the biggest decline since unemployment rate reached a high of 3.5% in May and June, while that between 25 and 34 years increased by 0.1 percent. The unemployment rate for women rose 0.5 percent to 5.5% Meanwhile, the consumer price index in the Tokyo metropolitan area rose 0.1 percent in Nov. 1996 and 0.2 percent in December. Analysts say that these increases were a sign of price stability.

Narrower deficit is posted: Ringgit's recent fall may widen gap for year
Article Abstract:
The Malaysian government posted a 1.8 billion ringgit current-account deficit for the first quarter of 1997, an increase over the ringgit deficit of 1.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 1996. However, the fall of the Ringgit and share prices have analysts worrying that the deficit may widen in the second quarter. Also, investors wary that the government is luring investors into economic activities that may yet register a downturn in the second quarter.

East Asia is well-positioned to ride out the bumps

Financial advisers and the World Bank say that East Asia may well be able to ride out its financial troubles since it has the advantage of good macroeconomic management, high rates of savings and investment and depth of international integration.
