Incoming tourism in Italy has increased by 41.8% to 29.8 million arrivals between 1993 and 1997 with incoming tourist spending at 47,544 billion lira. Outgoing tourism increased by 3.3% to over 17 million departures with spending at 80,599 billion lira in 1997. Meanwhile, domestic tourism also grew by 5.7% to 40.7 million Italians visiting local destinations with expenditure of 80,599 billion lira during the review period. The tourist and travel market is expected to continue its growth with incoming tourism to rise to 42 million arrivals by 2002, and outgoing to 20.1 million departures also by 2002. Domestic tourism will also increase to 49.6 million by 2002.

The travel and tourism market in Italy has reported a 1% increase in domestic tourism to 40.7 million in 1997 with expenditure reaching 80,599 billion lira. Italians visiting Italian destinations has increased by 5.7% with expenditure rising by 16.2% from 1993 to 1997. The increase, however, is only at 0.5% in real terms during the review period. Meanwhile, Italians spending overnights in Italian destinations has increased by only 1% from 1993 to 1997. The domestic tourism market attributes the increase to the weak value of lira in the first part of the review period.

The travel and tourism market in Italy has reported that 85.2% of incoming tourists or about 25 million opted for hotel accommodations in 1997. Tourists spending in hotels has increased by 40.7% from 1993 to 1997. The scarcity of available mid-priced hotels with European service standards has influenced the growth in other forms of accommodations such as camping sites, agri-tourism and other private accommodations. Incoming tourists opting to stay in alternative accommodations have increased by 47.8% to 4.6 million in 1997.
