Laurent Fabius, France's man of delayed destiny
Article Abstract:
French finance minister, Laurent Fabius, is a former prime minister who was in power at the time of the Rainbow Warrior affair, when secret servicemen from France blew up a Greenpeace vessel in New Zealand. He has also been acquitted by a special court of being responsible for French haemophiliacs being infected with AIDS due to a screening process not being used. Fabius can provide balance to France's government, and he may be seen as less of a political threat to prime minister, Lionel Jospin, within the cabinet.

France shuffles its pack
Article Abstract:
French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, has appointed Laurent Fabius as finance minister, and Jack Lang as education minister. Fabius' appointment involves a risk for Jospin, due to his strength as a rival, but he can also supply more balance for the French government. Lang should be able to deal with conflict in education more easily than his predecessor, Claude Allegre. A parliamentary election is scheduled for Mar 2002, with a presidential election following two months' afterwards.

Left hooked: France
Article Abstract:
Jospin may lose his seat in Parliament in the upcoming election although his district, Haute Garonne, has traditionally voted Socialist. Hospin's success a education minister and his dismissal from the post in 1992 will both be assets to his campaign.
