Legal-services sector opens
Article Abstract:
Government officials in Singapore are encouraging domestic law firms to forge strategic alliances with their foreign counterparts, in an attempt to broaden the legal services industry' access to global competition. The government is particularly aiming at top-caliber law practitioners in New York who would be vital in boosting the country's image as a regional-financial services center. Government officials also believe that allowing foreign law firms to operate in Singapore would enhance the quality and scope of legal services rendered to clients.

SPH may list Web unit
Article Abstract:
Singapore Press Holdings Ltd. (SPH) is planning an initial public offering for its Internet-related business but the final decision has not been made. This is because one of the factors that is going against the proposed listing is the drop in share prices of Internet companies in the US. However, SPH officials were optimistic because the firm's multimedia business is a profitable operation. SPH's multimedia division was created in 1995 and initially only offered online Asian newspapers. By 1997, an electronic shopping mall was added by SPH.
