Managing the tug-of-war between supply and demand in the service industries
Article Abstract:
A number of methods may be used to match a limited supply of services with unpredictable demand for such services, in a service organization. Tactical and operational mechanisms can enhance performance, increasing absolute capacity and efficiency. Some mechanisms require qualitative analysis, while others require mathematical models or analytic tools. Perceptual mechanisms can be used to maintain customer satisfaction, and many service firms, such as airlines, use a combination of mechanisms.

A structured product development perspective for service operations
Article Abstract:
Methods used in product development can be applied by companies which want to improve their service provision and make them consistent and reliable. Companies should examine the sequence of procedures that they need to follow, understand how the various elements of the design interact, known as architectural knowledge, and be aware of the models and principles which describe human behaviour. Systems need to be flexible and capable of adapting to change.

A comparative analysis of decision making procedures in the catalog sales industry
Article Abstract:
Mailing companies that adopt traditional marketing policies tend to make less profit than those which use a mathematical method to calculate how decisions should be made. The prescribed method takes into account budget requirements and is therefore suited to smaller business enterprises. The methodology is explained using a case study depicting a New York clothing business.
