Methods for siting new mini-recycling centres: experience from Nottingham
Article Abstract:
Planners have traditionally been involved in the location and management of landfill sites and their impact on the environment, and the progress of Nottingham University to develop systematic methods and criteria for sting recyling banks in Nottingham is reported. The spread of mini-recycling centres, particularly in the centres of residential areas has raised the question of whether they add to the quality of urban life. A survey found that most respondents would be willing to carry their domestic waste to mini-recycling centres, but sites would have to be selected carefully to encourage them to act on their good intentions.

English urban cycle route network experiments: the experience of the Greater Nottingham network
Article Abstract:
The Greater Nottingham Network Project, a large-scale experimental cycle route network in Nottingham, UK, has made an important contribution to the provision of safer alternatives for female and inexperienced cyclists in particular. Undertaken following the publication of the Dept of Transport's Cycling Consultation Paper in 1981, and completed in spring 1991, the network consists of around 37 kilometres of cycle route in the south of the city. Although the routes tend to increase journey times and there are problems with both their maintenance and their design, most cyclists appear to appreciate the facilities.

Alternative transport plans: encouraging the role of employers in changing staff commuter travel modes
Article Abstract:
Recent research has assessed efforts in the US and Europe to encourage employers to play a role in changing the commuting habits of their employees. Particular attention was given to a detailed research project carried out in Leicester, England. It is clear that the measures adopted by individual employers must be based on detailed knowledge of present travel behaviour, thus ensuring that an appropriate package of employee incentives is put together. Efforts which are supported by dedicated employee travel coordinators and by high-profile publicity tend to be most successful.
