The admission of Palestinian terrorist leader George Habash into France for medical treatment has harmed the popularity of France's socialist government. Combined with other factors, the scandal may allow the conservatives to win the next election. President Mitterrand denies any knowledge of events that led to the scandal.

French president Francois Mitterrand is under pressure to replace unpopular prime minister Edith Cresson. The pressure will grow if the Socialists get as soundly beaten in the upcoming regional elections as expected. A popular replacement would be European Commission president Jacques Delors.

French politics is in a period of boredom and malaise. The people are tired of the policies of Francois Mitterrand, even though under him France is prospering. Mitterrand may have to make some changes in his government in order to restore public enthusiasm.
