Vivendi chairman, Jean-Paul Messnier, has sold businesses valued at $15.6 billion since he took over. The company was previously called Compagnie Generale des Eaux, and businesses sold include interests in real estate. There have also been acquisitions in publishing, software and motion pictures. Vivendi is also selling a 60% stake in Sithe Energies. Vivendi has two main areas, communications and environmental services. The company's stock prices has performed well, and Messier has to focus on managing the two distinct businesses.

South Korea's conglomerates or chaebol are to restructure, according to a government announcement. Over half of a total of 264 business units are to be sold. South Korea has been affected by overcapacity and too much debt, and the chaebol has too many plants and employees as well as too many subsidiaries. Each chaebol is to focus on four and six businesses and reduce debts.
