Refurbishment Czech-style
Article Abstract:
Jestico and Whiles was commissioned by the British Council to design a new headquarters in Prague, Czechoslovakia. The headquarters comprises two floors of a modernist building and the new design involved rennovation and the construction of a glazed floor and light well. The design is in keeping with the original building and provides a successful and popular headquarters. The architects used local materials whenever possible and found the skill and enthusiasm of the local architects and builders to be good.

Carving out a promise
Article Abstract:
A temporary gallery has been constructed at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Wakefield, England. The gallery, set in parkland, takes inspiration from tents and huts with a fabric roof atop wooden walls. Inside, the space is light with no differentiation between the two forms of construction. It is a successful structure in that is was cheap, rapidly built and does not impede any future plans for permanent buildings. However, it is out of place in the sculpture park and thus somewhat disappointing.

Time for reflection
Article Abstract:
Douglas Allsop's wall-piece is installed in the house at Kettle's Yard, which is a large black acrylic sheet, about 0.5*1.25m, hung on tiny steel pins. It has four equally spaced vertical cut-out slots that are quite wide, revealing the white roughcast wall behind.
