Restless in Zanzibar
Article Abstract:
There has been some continuity in government in Tanzania following the departure of Julius Nyere as president, despite a move away from African socialism, and there has been a lack of sectarian violence. Zanzibar was independent during 1963-1964, until troops were sent in and a union was established, setting up Tanzania. There is revival of a movement for autonomy in Zanzibar, and this has been met by calls for less autonomy from central government. There are concerns that violence could follow elections in 2000.
