Revving up motorcycle sales: manufacturers see potential for new bikes
Article Abstract:
A number of Japanese motorcycle manufacturers are bullish over the Vietnamese motorcycle market, believing that the country's projected 5% growth for 1998 is not going to affect demand for motorcycles. Officials of Yamaha Motor, Suzuki Motor and Honda Motor all report capacity increases for 1998, many of whom are doubling capacity. Officials of Honda Motor reports that they were able to sell 473,000 motorcycles in Vietnam in 1996, consisting of 222,000 new bikes and 251,000 used bikes, and that the 260,000 bike sales posted in 1997 is reflective only of the supply not keeping up with demand.

Roaring motorcycle sales
Article Abstract:
Japanese motorcyle makers anticipate sales growth in Asia, as motorcycles have become indispensible for the region's emerging economies. Yamaha Motor expects Asian sales to grow to 5 million units by the year 2000, from 2.08 million in 1996. Suzuki Motor expects production to increase to 2 million in 1997, a 10% increase from 1996. However, Kawasaki Heavy Industries is making the biggest push in Asia with plans to saturate the Asian motorcycle market with its bigger motorcycles, and is confident of its position in the Asian market despite its late entry.
