Russia's value gap
Article Abstract:
The post-Soviet Russian economy is saddled with many businesses that in effect subtract value from the nation's gross national product (GNP). Indeed, the impact of such value-subtracting companies is so great the value of Russia's 1992 raw material exports exceeds its GNP.

The central bank of Russia rightly increased money supply in response to price liberalization that began in 1992. But monetary growth continues although price adjustments have ceased, and liberal monetary policy could result in hyperinflation.
