STATE'S GDP GROWTH PEGGED AT 5.8% IN 1998-99
Article Abstract:
The gross domestic product (GDP) of Karnataka in 1998-99 is projected at 5.8 percent (4.9 percent in 1997-98). Foodgrain production in the State in 1998-99 is expected to be 88.32 lakh tonnes(82.59 lakh tonnes). The Economic Survey of Karnataka has said that 20 percent income comes from the secondary sector and the manufacturing sector accounts for 60 percent of the secondary sector. Industrial production increased by 7.02 percent in 1996- 97. Power generation is likely to increase by 0.9 percent to 17,296 mw in 1998-99. (rk) (kvr)

The Economic Survey 1998-99 has called for sustained reforms to revive the economy. The survey has recommended lowering of interest rates, reforms in the financial sector, small-scale de- reservation, freeing of agricultural trade, user charges for education and health and green taxes. The survey has projected gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate at 5.8 percent for 1998- 99. The revival of the agricultural sector and the service sector has contributed to the GDP growth rate.
