Sauli Niinisto, on Europe's edge
Article Abstract:
Finnish finance minister, Sauli Niinisto, also leads the National Coalition Party and awaits elections on Mar 21 1999, which could result in his becoming prime minister. Finnish unemployment and interest rates have dropped, and personalities rather than policies have become important in the election campaign. Niinisto proposes the continued gradual sale of state assets, small reductions in income tax, and an additional nuclear power plant. Finland will take over the presidency of the European Union (EU) in 2nd half 1999, and Niinisto hopes that EU budget reforms will be completed by then.

Can Ron run?
Article Abstract:
Ron Davies could resign as the head of the Welsh Labor party, which would mean that he would not head the new Welsh assembly. Davies helped encourage support for the new assembly, and the idea of elections using proportional representation. The government may consider retaining Davies. He has resigned from the cabinet, and Conservative politicians argue that he should also be barred from leading Wales, but his supporters argue that issues in his private life should not be relevant to his public life.
