Japan's ports keelhaul the economy
Article Abstract:
Japan needs to reform its port regulations and establish a first-class port services business to remain a trading powerhouse in the 21st century and particularly because shipping comprises over 98% of the country's trade by volume. The implementation of Japanese port-reform initiatives has failed since 1997 because of the speculation that they could compromise port labor stability. However, some industry observers claim that current port regulations are hurting the very workers they are designed to help.
