Skin whitener sales grow, but so does controversy
Article Abstract:
Demand for skin-whitening lotions is soaring in Asia. There is no accurate estimate of the size of this market, but industry observers believe that annual sales reach hundreds of millions of dollars. However, there is growing controversy over the use of such products. In the Philippines, the desire for fairer skin is linked to a colonial mentality that leads women to think that lighter skin is more beautiful. In Singapore, the issue is tied with social class since the rich tend to be fairer than the poor who have to toil under the sun. Concerns that skin-whiteners may cause skin damage have also been raised.
