Sony posts record profit: but Asia turmoil could hurt this year's results
Article Abstract:
Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony Corp reported a second consecutive annual profit for the year ending Mar 31, 1997, but company officials admit that prospects for 1998 are not good with the Asian and Japanese financial crisis. Sony reported a group pretax profit of 453.7 bil yen, up 45% from previous year's pretax profits, with sales increasing by 19% to 6.7 tril yen. Pulling up the profits were sales of consumer products such as audio and video products which increased by 7% to 9%, as well as the sales of computer games which rose 72% due to the popularity of Sony's PlayStation.
