State in the middle
Article Abstract:
ASEAN officials welcomed recent indications from Burma that it is interested in joining the regional organization, primarily because they want to reduce its dependence on China. After Rangoon cracked down on the democracy movement in 1988, only Beijing moved ahead with full ties, while ASEAN countries dithered. Now the latter group worries about the widespread presence of Chinese engineers in Burma, installing and maintaining military equipment and building infrastructure. Burma and China are not likely change soon.

Burma road: China's economic push southward worries neighbours
Article Abstract:
China has been making moves to establish a trade route through Burma, which would comprise road, rail and river links. However, neighbouring states are concerned that the link is part of a plan by Beijing to increase its naval presence in the Indian Ocean. China is also trying to widen its influence in other Southeast Asian countries, with military aid to the Phnom Penh government, and a high-level delegation to Bangkok.

Natural allies: Thailand's neighbours forge closer bonds
Article Abstract:
Cambodia may soon join Burma and Laos as a loose group of Southeast Asian countries with a preference for authoritarian nationalism and antipathy for Thailand, their relatively wealthy and powerful neighbor. All three countries hope to join the Association of Southeast Nations by about the year 2000, and all remain distrustful of a democratic Thailand that historically had close ties to anti-government forces in each.
