Switzerland joins the queue

Switzerland announced its intention to apply for membership in the European Community (EC) on May 18, 1992. EC officials and some member nations are not anxious for the Swiss to join the EC, since they are passionately neutral in foreign affairs and have earned a reputation for toughness in negotiations.

Members of the EFTA who join will boost EC funds but Eastern European nations could need up to 13 billion ECUs a year in economic aid. It may be 20 years before the EC admits Eastern countries but only four until Austria, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland become full members.

Norway not hooked
Article Abstract:
Norway will most likely vote against joining the European Community in a planned referendum. Most Norwegians disagree with EC economic philosophy and do not wish to share their oil or fishing rights, and farmers do not want to lose government subsidies.
