China impact on Taiwan election: all parties are moving away from radicalism towards the centre
Article Abstract:
China's blatant efforts to influence the Dec legislature elections and those next Mar for the presidency have alienated all Taiwanese voters. Where relations had warmed under President Lee Teng-hui, now many islanders view the mainland as their chief enemy, and even the pro-reunification New Party has been forced to proclaim its readiness to repel an invasion. Regardless of who wins, likely the ruling Kuomintang, neither reunification nor open independence are likely.

Jiang Zemin goes fishing: 'moderate' overture is designed to lure Taiwan into a dialogue
Article Abstract:
Chinese President Jiang Zemin's New Year appeal to Taiwan is an effort to draw Taiwan into a dialogue resulting in its own capitulation to Chinese control. There is no sign that China is relaxing its hardline position against Taiwanese independence, and it reserves the right to military intervention on the island. Taiwan would be right to enter into such a dialogue, but should remain fully aware of China's insistence on getting everything while giving nothing.
