Tariff structure of Japanese electric power companies: an empirical analysis using DEA
Article Abstract:
An empirical study was conducted to assess the performance and efficiency of the Japanese electric power industry. Using cost-based data envelopment analysis, current tariff deviations of Japanese electric power services from marginal cost and Ramsey prices were also investigated. Results indicate that electric power companies based in Tokyo, Chube and Kansai present better overall efficiency than those operating in Hokkado, Tohoku, Chugoku and Kyushu. It was also noted that the electric power companies in 1994 outperform those in 1993 because of technological progress.

A benchmark approach for baseball evaluation
Article Abstract:
A new analytical method for baseball evaluation called 'A Benchmark Approach,' by combining Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with Offensive Earned-Run Average (OERA) is proposed. The proposed method can identify a best performer among many baseball players and their ranking scores. Since the DEA method has a shortcoming in evaluating baseball performance, the original DEA approach is extended to a Slack-Adjusted model and a new application of its combination with OERA is suggested.
