Article Abstract:
Companies which have a premium brand can enjoy many benefits while market conditions are favourable, but can also see a crisis situation develop very rapidly if negative market conditions emerge. This was the case for Scottish farmer Stewart Macphie, who saw a dramatic slump in demand for his Aberdeen Angus beef when the BSE problem was made public. Premium brands have been badly affected by the more austere consumer attitudes of the 1990s, with people no longer being prepared to pay large sums of money simply for a prestige brand name.
