The problems are being caused by fluctuations and devaluations in exchange rates relative to the US dollar and competition from foreign exports. The problems the country are experiencing are only a natural consequence of the overextension of banks and inability to sustain growth levels and increase standards of living.

East Asia's economic malaise is only just beginning
Article Abstract:
East Asia's economic problems like the one being experienced by Thailand is just the beginning of a wave of devaluations as current-account deficits continue to deteriorate. Governments should realize that they should allow their currencies to float to enable their financial institutions to reliquefy themselves. Failure to do so will hurt their respective financial institutions and would bring about more severe consequences that that being experienced by Thailand.
