The British disease revisited
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom labor productivity appears to be lower than that of the US, France and Germany, and gross domestic product per capita is higher in those three countries than in the UK. UK productivity has improved since 1979. The lower UK level of unemployment means that more of the less productive workers are in employment, which may tend to push down productivity. The problem may also be linked to lack of investment in the UK, since output per employee is affected by investment. UK capital productivity, or output per unit of capital, is superior to that of Germany and France, though less than that of the US.

Beware the mutant: evolution
Article Abstract:
Research indicates evolution favors organisms with unusually high mutation rates. These 'hypermutants' may explain why many bacteria are developing resistance to antibiotics. A high mutation rate in bacteria helps them adapt rapidly to changing environments.
