The Cohesion Fund and an enlarged Union
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) has increased the number of its members to 15 with the entry of Austria, Finland and Sweden in 1994. Two possible members include Malta and Cyprus, and there are proposals for eastern European countries to join the EU. The Cohesion Fund began on an informal basis in 1992 and was formally set up in 1994. The aim of the fund is to reduce differences between the richer and poorer countries of the EU, through investment in infrastructure and transportation.
