The French market for travel & tourism: key trends

Data supplied by the French government and the World Tourism Organization (WTO) depict that majority of the French people spend their holidays inside the country. However, since holidays to faraway places become less expensive, the French, especially the youth, are inclined to spend vacations abroad. In addition, in 1997, the market for domestic tourism in France was the largest at FF242.7 billion. In this connection, the most important form of transportation when travelling within the country are aeroplanes and car if within the country.

The Spanish market for travel & tourism

Spain had a record year for incoming year in 1995, which saw an increase in visitors from 61.4 million in 1994 to 63.6 million the next year. Europeans accounted for most of these arrivals. Compared to these foreign tourists, Spaniards cut down their holiday-taking habits in 1995, reducing the number of short breaks they took by 17%. The Spaniards' most preferred destination was Europe. The most popular type of holiday in Spain among Spaniards and foreigners were beach holidays. Market outlook is discussed.

Article Abstract:
France has seen expenditure on horeca and tourism-based travel total FF340,783 million in 1997 to account for 7.1% of the entire consumer spending. Consumer expenditure associated with horeca and tourism experienced a growth of 10.8% from 1992 to 1996, in current price terms. However, real growth in expenditure was reported at only 0.2% in taking account the effects of inflation in the French economy.
