The German market for fast food, buoyed by spending by consumers with fast-paced lifestyles, indicated healthy growth during the 1993-1997 review period. The market was dominated by burgers, which represented more than two thirds of value sales in 1997. Pizza posted the highest sectoral growth, increasing its outlets by over 200% over the period. Overall, the number of fast food outlets posted a growth of 52.4 % over during the period, registering a total of some 3,080 units in 1997. The market's value reached 6,236 million Deutsche markes in 1997, growing 43.2% on 1993 levels. The market is projected to grow some 30.4% between 1997 and 2002 to 8,130 million Deutsche marks based on 1997 prices.

The German fast food market was marked by the dominance of the burger sector which registered 1,161 outlets in 1997, accounting for 37.7% of the market's outlets. The number of fast food outlets in the country realized strong growth due to strong expansion by major fast food operators as well as small regional fast food chains. One major medium for expansion within the market was provided by franchising. The dominant burger sector increased its market share by some 2.3 percentage points over the 1993-1997 period, but the pizza sector posted the most impressive market share growth of 5.5 percentage points from 12.9% in 1993 to 18.3% in 1997.

The German market for fast food was dominated by the burger sector which generated 71.7% of fast food sales in 1997. Burger fast food operators retained the dominant share of the market via continuous diversification of their product range, although the sector experienced a decrease in share marginally as pizzas become more popular. The value sales share of other fast food chains, defined as categories other than burgers, pizzas, desserts and ambulant outlets, decreased from 21.6% in 1993 to 18.2% in 1997. Pizza chains achieved an increase of over 200% in sales turnover from 4.8% in 1993 to 8.6% in 1997.
