The Stock Exchange of Thailand
Article Abstract:
Credit should be extended to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) for deciding to stay open during the turmoil in Bangkok which ended in the deaths of many demonstrators. Some brokers had already wanted to close the exchange even before the violence broke out, but the damage which the Hong Kong market suffered when it closed during the Oct 1987 crash caused some finance officialsto reconsider. Outside Bangkok, however, the SET has been strongly criticized for allegedly blocking applications of some property companies. Inability of these companies to meet projections has been cited as a reason.

A bridge too far?
Article Abstract:
Thailand suffers from a shortage of investment funds for its ambitious infrastructure and industry projects. The country has sought to alleviate the problem by enacting the Securities Exchange Act and making significant amendments ot the Public Companies Act. The country's capital markets should be enlivened as the securities law aims to rationalize the primary debt and equities markets and reduce the tax burden on stock dividends and interest payments.
