The east hungers for megabytes
Article Abstract:
The eastern European computer industry is experiencing a period of intense restructuring amidst swiftly changing market conditions. The break-up of former state-run companies and the emergence of thousands of new private companies has led to a surge in demand for computer-related services that has overwhelmed many east European computer companies. At the same time, the liberalization of trade has left many large east European computer firms unable to compete with more advanced competitors from the west. The changes in the market have led to a spate of joint ventures that have sought to combine eastern technical skills with western financial knowhow. Some small companies based in Czechoslovakia and Hungary, however, are bucking the trend and have managed to secure solid niches in the computer software and hardware markets of eastern Europe.
