Newly elected president Arnoldo Aleman of Nicaragua has had a successful beginning for his administration, despite continuing opposition by the Sandinistas and their leader Daniel Ortega. The Sandinistas boycotted Aleman's inauguration, but past president Violeta Chammorro attended.

Recent discoveries in Nicaragua have linked Sandinists with Salvadorean guerrillas, Middle East terrorists and an international kidnapping ring run by Basque separatists. The revelations embarrassed Pres Violeta Chamorro, who had let the Sandinists share in the government.

Elections in Nicaragua were fair despite protests by the losing candidate, Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista Party. Foreign observers noted poor organization, but said that the voting that elected the right-wing candidate Arnoldo Aleman was conducted in an honest manner.
