The labour force
Article Abstract:
The size of the labour force is determined by the size of the total population and the activity rate of the population, with social, economic and demographic trends affecting these two factors. The total population is influenced by net migration, birth rates and death rates. Death rates are affected by the ageing of the population and medical advances, while birth rates are affected by education, changing social attitudes, the use of contraception and the emancipation of women. The activity rate of a population is affected by its age structure and gender composition.
