The mixed feelings of Europeans
Article Abstract:
France is supporting action by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Yugoslavia, and is also critical of the role of the US in the conflict, despite working in harmny with the in terms of military co-operation. There have been criticisms of the war and NATO's actions in the French press and from many mainstream politicians, and anti-Americanism has become common in France as a whole. There is also a call in France for a European defense identity, with many seeking European actions without the involvement of the US.

French president Jacques Chirac's outspoken foreign relations policy has stirred controversy among the European community and in the US. Chirac's handling of the Israel-Lebanon conflict in Apr 1996, reminded critics of former French president Charles de Gaulle's policies.

A new foreign policy?

French Pres Jaacques Chirac understands that he and Socialist PM Lionel Jospin will have to come to some sort of agreement on foreign policy. Hubert Vedrine was a good choice as foreign minister, as he is practical and diplomatic.
