The turnover of market leaders in UK manufacturing industry, 1979-86
Article Abstract:
Data on the turnover of the five leading manufacturing firms in the UK from 1976-1986 are analyzed. Two benchmarks have been developed to determine if turnover rates are either 'high' or 'low.' Actual turnover rates were found to be lower than those generated by the two benchmarks. This implies that market structures in the UK are rigid. A model of firm growth rates is derived to explain the low turnover rates. Results indicate that high advertising and innovation rates among the leading firms contributed to maintaining their rank in the market.

Thinking creatively about markets
Article Abstract:
An evaluation of the constructs that govern the definition of markets show that markets are defined either according to the business activity or the type of business, both of which are too narrow for present-day needs of economics of intuiting corporate strategy. The definition of market is at best a human construction placed to confine the business activity for better characterization and analysis. But the reality is that markets are just a set of interactions that result in some form of economic activity.

What do we know about entry?
Article Abstract:
Many studies on entry conclude that it has a significant impact on industry structure and performance. However, this may not be the case in the presence of high entry barriers that prevent new entrants from being competitive with incumbent firms. When incumbents fail to exploit exogenous shifts in cost and demand that undermine entry barriers, entry may become an important factor on industry structure and performance.
