Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
Buying of votes and patronage extended by legislators are the most important factors which influence election results in Thailand. 70 to 80% of the sitting legislators are confident that these factors will result in their being re-elected in the Sep 1992 elections. Banharn Silpa-archa of the Chart Thai party and former Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan are some of the candidates who are so certain of victory that they are hardly visiting their constituencies. A newly-formed, independent group called PollWatch, hopes to encourage and monitor fairness in the election.

Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
The last refugee camp on the Thai-Cambodian border in the village of Aranyaprathet, Thailand was closed on Mar 30, 1993. The camps, which at one time numbered seven, were set up as Cambodians fled their country following the Khmer Rouge victory in 1975. The Khmer Rouge's brutal rule induced thousands more to flee after Vietnam intervened in Cambodia in Dec 1978. However, 370,000 of these refugees eventually went back to Cambodia, with the last of them being bussed out on Mar 30. Aranyaprathet has now become a center for black-market imports from Cambodia.

Chatichai fever
Article Abstract:
Thailand's ex-Prime Minister Chatichai Choonhavan has been eagerly campaigning the regain the post that was taken from him in a military-led coup in 1991. Chatichai banks on voter support from areas such as Korat, situated in the northeast, on which he spent government's money on infrastructure and public utilities. His opponents, however, see the court cases revolving around his unexplained wealth as the main handicap to the politician's success in the Sep 13, 1992 elections.
