OF SHRIMPS AND TURTLES
Article Abstract:
The crisis-ridden Indian seafood sector has benefited from the World Trade Organisation's ruling that the US should permit shrimp exports from India. The US had banned shrimp exports from India stating that sea turtles were being killed as Indian fishing vessels were not using turtle excluder devices. India's seafood exports increased to Rs3605.25 crore during April- December 1998 from Rs3593.15 crore during April-December 1997 but have gone down in dollar terms to $851.29 million from $991.21 million. CALL RATES ZOOM TO 24 PC, END AT 21 PC
Article Abstract:
In Mumbai's inter bank call money market, the overnight call rates on January 14 closed at 21 percent compared to 10.5 percent on January 13. The market which opened at 10-12 percent reached 24 percent before closing at 18-21 percent. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) through its open market operations had removed Rs3000 crore form the system and the market was not aware of this. A demand-supply mismatch was created which resulted in moving up call money rates. (vsm)
