Unpegged
Article Abstract:
A number of South East Asian currencies are moving away from being pegged to the dollar, to provide stability to their foreign exchange markets and effect a structural reform in their economies. The recent strengthening of the dollar against the yen has decreased Japanese investments and technology transfers, which had grown in the mid-1980s when the dollar fell against the yen. In addition, the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia are undergoing a currency crisis as a result of slow exports, high foreign borrowing, excessive bank loans for property in a buyer's market, and an exchange rate linked to the dollar.
