Economic prospects for Southeast Asia appears unpromising, as growth would be hindered by financial difficulties, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB). ADB analysts believe Indonesia's restructuring efforts would take three years to complete, while Malaysia seem to have poor chances of obtaining growth in fiscal year 1999. On the other hand, China's gross domestic product would increase by 6.8% in 1999. as India and the Philippines acquire 7.0% and 4.0% increases, respectively.

Malaysian economy taps on the brakes
Article Abstract:
Malaysian is stepping up efforts to control economic growth and address investor fears of sudden economic collapse. Deputy PM Anwar Ibrahim expects economic growth to slow down to 8.2% in 1996, and 8% in 1997, from 1995 record growth of 9.5%. Officials are also pushing for the development of the high-tech and services industry since the manufacturing sector has been experiencing labor shortages.
