The 61,000 pubs in the UK are enjoying a resurgence of popularity as the owners, often breweries, successfully create atmospheres that entice customers. The 1989 beer orders against monopolies, forced big breweries to sell 11,000 pubs which were then bought by smaller breweries.

British breweries are consolidating because of declining demand that is lowering profit margins and production. Some breweries are coping by diversifying into various retailing and leisure businesses. British pubs may diversify by selling food in their establishments.
