Mummy's boys
Article Abstract:
Testosterone levels in zebra finch eggs are secreted by mother inches, and are higher when they perceive the male fathering the chicks to be more attractive. This was shown in an experiment at the University of St Andrews, Scotland, where Diego Gill made male finches more attractive using colored bands. This may be due to favoritism to make the favored birds more attractive, or it may be due to birds with better genes being able to absorb more testosterone without ill effects.
