Barum Continental strengthens its market position
Article Abstract:
Barum Continental (BC) (Otrokovice, Czech Republic), Europe's largest tyre manufacturer, plans to produce nearly 15 mil tyres in 2001. In 2002 the firm should produce 17 mil tyres. In 2003 the company's car tyre production should culminate. Its lorry tyre production should be increased in 2004 and 2005. Currently, the firm is producing nearly 350,000 lorry tyres per year. In 2000 it saw a gross profit of CEK 1.7 bil. Its 2000 proceeds totalled CEK 16.1 bil, up 9% from 1999. Its production rose by 20% in 2000 compared to 1999. The firm produced more than 13 mil car tyres in 2000. It makes over 40,000 tyres per day. It exports 78% of its production. Its exports increased by 3% in 2000 compared to 1999. One third of the firm's exports go to central European countries associated in CEFTA, Poland, in the future also Romania, Bulgaria and Slovenia. The firm has about 3,800 employees. Their average wage will exceed CEK 22,000 in 2001.

Rubena wants to dismiss 300 employees

Rubena (Nachod, Czech Republic), rubber products company, is in the process of restructuring. The firm should dismiss about 300 employees within the restructuring by the autumn of 2001. It will dismiss mainly technicians and marketing employees and overhead workers. Currently, Rubena has about 2,500 employees at all its plants in Hradec Kralove, Nachod, and Velke Porici, all Czech Republic. The plant in Nachod has 1,700 employees and generates a turnover of about CEK 2 bil per year. The firm will take 300-350 workers for its production. Rubena manufactures mainly rubber mouldings, rubber-textiles and products for the automotive industry.

Barum to begin manufacturing for Ferrari
Article Abstract:
Barum Continental (BC) (Otrokovice, Czech Republic), tyre manufacturer, will launch tyres of the highest category during 1H 2001. The tyres are intended for Ferrari and Porsche, among others. The new DEM 80 mil technology will be installed at BC by the end of May 2001. The firm will start the full production of the tyres in 2002. BC should produce more than 1.5 mil pieces of the tyres per year. In 2003 BC should utilize its full car tyre production capacity.
