The hotel and leisure industry has attracted investment in the center of Manchester, England. There are plans for an additional 23 hotels with 5,500 beds, for the airport and city center. There are risks that the market could become oversupplied. Operators still find Manchester an attractive city, and some are investing in order to be able to compete better, with Jarvis Hotels to carry out a facelift. Room occupancy rates have been stable at some 74% in 1999, though demand has dropped slightly.

Manchester, England, has yet to be developed as a conference location which would bring income for restaurants, hotels and the like. A new seminar center has been completed as part of the G-Mex exhibition center, and a concert hall has been opened, the Bridgewater Hall with seats for 2,000 which a is a possible conference venue. The conference market brings some 80 million pounds sterling to Manchester's economy and this is likely to rise with the completion of the center.

Europe: a vital source of top-up funding

The cities of Bradford and Leeds, England, use funds from the European Union (EU) for a range of projects. Grants include RECHAR, geared to helping areas which previously depended on coal mining. Urban renewal funds have also been granted for older parts of both cities. Funds to provide training for unemployed people are available from the European Social Fund. Bradford is also seeking funds for the development of technology in small and medium firms.
