Information, and quick about it
Article Abstract:
Information technologies such as workflow systems and groupware are increasingly becoming popular as the need to simplify complicated business processes arise. Workflow systems which allow the entry of pertinent information into a common computer file permit access by users from any division of an organization. On the other hand, groupware products make possible the communication and sharing of information among computer-using workgroups who may be located in a single room or distributed in places around the world. While the appeal of workflow systems are limited among large organizations because of their high price, usage of groupwares is expected to surpass that of workflows because it is cheaper and easily applicable. These information technologies are seen to limit costs and enhance efficiency and quality.

Lock up your data
Article Abstract:
The threat to computer security is a real concern that should be addressed by organizations that use information technology. In fact, even the most heavily protected systems are in danger of being accessed or destroyed by unscrupulous entities. As evidence, more than 250,000 entry attempts were made on the computerized non-classified data of the Pentagon in 1996 alone. The UK National Computing Center estimates that damage wrought by virus, hackers, data theft and data corruption in the UK amounted to 1.2 billion pounds sterling between 1993 and 1994. However, the figures could actually be higher because it is quite difficult to measure the frequency of security breaches. Organizations should pinpoint its most sensitive areas and take measures to protect those functions.

Interactive video: a risky business
Article Abstract:
Interactive video (IV) is becoming a very popular form of training. IV can reduce training time and costs while increasing learning retention. British Telecom reduced training costs from 150 to 15 pounds sterling per person. The technique is based on the fact that information is held on discs instead of film. The data can be recovered on a random basis as it is needed by the user. The programs are either custom made or available in 'generic' formats. The National Interactive Video Center publishes information on the latest technology and suppliers.
